Subscribe to a publication (paper or electronic – there are lots of free ones out there) devoted to an interest that you have already or would like to develop. Not only might you learn something fascinating, but you’ll have the added bonus of looking forward to the arrival of the next issue – another great reason to get up in the morning! More than anything, though, you’ll be making a commitment to yourself by saying to the world, “I’m still here, I’m still valuable, and I’m still growing!”

Pollen problems? In many areas, allergy season can cause outdoor-going pets to develop a fine layer of green dust over an otherwise clean and healthy coat. Try wiping your pet with a dry floor-cleaning cloth, like those made by Swiffer: the grains of pollen will be trapped by the cloth, and your pet won’t need a bath! This simple trick helps cut down on your allergy symptoms (as well as your pet’s) and keeps your house cleaner.

Do bear in mind that these cloths contain wax and a fragrance agent. If your pet licks a lot or has sensitive skin, consider using a damp washcloth instead. Whichever you choose, remember that you’re not rubbing your pet so much as lightly running the cloth over the fur: a gentle skim should be enough to remove the bulk of the pollen. Rubbing will only push the pollen more deeply into your pet’s coat.

And ask people to bring along food or beverages or to run out to the store if a brief afternoon visit stretches into a leisurely dinner.
